Background
Ambient dust from construction and from the environment was contaminating the campus cooling tower system resulting in contamination buildup in the cooling tower equipment. This required significant labor hours to clean and frequent blowdown, resulting in higher water usage than was desired.
Challenge
The customer wanted to reduce the labor costs associated with the cooling tower and to reduce the campus wastewater stream. A consulting engineer was tasked with researching possible treatment and filtration options.
Solution
The consultant and customer selected the Amiad side stream filtration system based on the history of installations in cooling tower service and the recommended system’s low backwash water volume and small footprint. The system treats a side stream flow of 3,654 GPM (830 m3/h) per filter. Water is fed to the filter system from the cooling tower main line, after the condenser. The system consists of 2×12” Omega II units with 50 micron screens. The system was installed on 9/1/2015.
Results
The customer is very happy with the filter system, and the cooling tower has required little maintenance or service labor since the system installation.
