Background

Dardunup Butchering Company is a leader in the Western Australia meat industry, supplying quality meats for the last 70 years.
During the production process, the company produces 21 m3/h of wastewater containing high loads of nutrients, fats, and other organic material.
In order to comply with environmental regulations, this wastewater needs to be treated to a quality that allows for its safe discharge to the environment.

Challenge

The difficult wastewater conditions require a complicated solution involving several wastewater treatment plant (WTTP) technologies.
The existing WWTP included dissolved air flotation, anaerobic and aerobic processes, however the posttreatment water quality was not up to the required standard to allow for the wastewater to be to discharged.
Dardunup Butchering Company contacted Amiad to propose a solution.

Solution

Amiad designed and successfully commissioned a 0.1 micron microfiltration plant system that was able to cope with challenging wastewater and achieve a level of quality that enabled safe, compliant discharge to the environment.

Amiad supplied a skid-mounted WWTP that includes:
• Silicon carbide membranes
• Pumps
• Chemical dosing system
• Dewatering press (more details below)
• Central PLC controller
• HMI control screen

Dewatering System
During the operation of the silicon carbide (SiC) membrane system, sludge accumulates in the system tank.
Amiad installed the multi-disc (MD) press to separate the water from the solids in the sludge. The low-density sludge is metered into a flocculation tank for polymerization. Once flocculated, the sludge flows by gravity into the MD press tube for processing. The effluent and solids are simultaneously separated and discharged.
